Rails 3 Meeting Round-Up

Hey big thanks to Mark Turner for talking about Rails3 and Ruby Version Manager (RVM) last night. The subject matter proved interesting enough that we didn't have time to do the 'hack fest' part of the meeting. Please stay tuned to the mailing list for details on that.

Mark has posted a blog about using RVM to test out Rails3. Check it out. For those using Ubuntu, I had to follow this post to get `rails console` to work for me with Rails3 in RVM.

I can't find the full "Exploring Rails 3" conference online at the moment, but here was one of the many great talks given:

February Meeting - Rails 3 Hackfest - Wed Feb 24th

After a slight hiatus for the holidays and other distractions, COWPU will be back this month for a first ever "HACKFEST".

We will be diving into the brand new hotness that is Rails 3 and creating a simple Content Management System that will use to create a website for a local non profit (Non-Profit to be determined).

The evening will start off with a quick talk from Mark Turner on setting up the Rails 3 stack on your local machine. We will also have a round-table type discussion on the "latest and greatest" features to come out with the framework.

The rest of the evening will be fueled by the keg-er-ator at the G5 Headquarters, and copious amounts of code slanging and hackery.

August Meeting - Load Pages In A Blink Of An Eye

This month we're going to meet at the Deschutes Public Library downtown on August 26 (last Wednesday of the month). I've booked the "Hutchinson Room", which is upstairs on the second floor. We're going to kick things off at 5:30.

Come join us to discuss techniques and technologies that can help make your site load blazing fast. We're going to have more of a forum type discussion to share ideas and keep things more interactive. When it comes to optimizing load times, there are typically many different angles to look at so I'd rather not limit the meeting to just one presenter.

Bill Blodget will be starting things off though by showing how the Akamai Content Delivery Network can serve static based content. I would be super stoked if someone wanted to do a short demo of Y-Slow and possibly show some projects they used the tool to find slowdowns.

For the May Meeting tomorrow (see post below), we are going to meet in Redmond out at Altrec.com. Here is a Google Maps link to the building, which is on 641 SE Umatilla. If your looking at the map, our building is the small tree next to the rock.

If you aren't a map person, just turn left when you see the big T-Mobile building. Then take your first left onto Umatilla. Our driveway is the the second one on the right. If you see a big building that say's Altrec.com, then you've gone a bit too far (that's our warehouse). I'm in the building right before that.

Once again, this meeting is going to have free food, a raffle to give away schwag, and sweet show and tell sessions featuring you.

For this meeting we are going to do something a little different. Instead of having one person formally prepare a longer presentation, this meeting is going to be about showing off interesting projects you have built. Anyone who thinks they've got something the COWPU community would benefit from seeing, and/or would like to receive helpful advise- this meeting is your chance to show it off. Each mini presentation should be pretty small and informal, and there will be a projector and internet connection available.

5:15 - Arrive and network / Enjoy snacks and refreshments
5:45 - Announcements / Handout books / Draw for door prize
6:00 - Start show and tell sessions (about 10-15 min each)

So far, we already have two potential projects...
- Solar search with facets
- DOM based front end templating engine

We are going to have our scheduled meeting (last Wednesday of the month) on the 27th out at Altrec.com in Redmond. I know what your thinking- you don't want to drive out to Redmond. Trust me, I don't like driving out there anymore than you do, but my company has a big meeting area and is more than happy to host this months meeting.

Open Source Bridge

COWPU will be raffling off ONE pass to the Open Source Bridge Conference at a future meeting! Details will be coming soon...

Open Source Bridge is a new conference for developers working with open source technologies. It will take place June 17-19 in Portland, OR, with five tracks connecting people across projects, languages and experience to explore how we do our work and why we participate in open source. The conference structure is designed to provide developers with an opportunity to learn from people they might not connect with at other events.

Open Source Bridge is run entirely by volunteers who believe in the need for an open source conference that focuses on the culture of being an open source citizen, regardless of where in the stack you choose to code. All proceeds from conference registration and sponsorship go directly to the costs of the conference.

Our sessions and events will share in-depth knowledge about using, creating and contributing to open source as citizens of a greater community. You’ll find relevant information whether you write web apps for the cloud, tinker with operating system internals, create hardware, run a startup, or blog about technology.

We’re still seeking session proposals, so submit yours by the end of March 31st.

Some examples of our proposals so far: Brian Aker on Drizzle, a reboot of MySQL designed “for the cloud”; Linux Kernel hacker Greg K-H about how Linux manages development; Ward Cunningham, inventor of the wiki, about what’s next in collaboration; Amber Case, an anthropologist living in both the physical and virtual worlds, about Cyborg Citizenship.
