Topic: Amazon Web Services - Is "Cloud Computing" the answer?

So you've created a sweet web application... now what? Age old decisions come into play when determining where to host the application, who's going to manage the servers, and how much bandwidth is needed. Is "Cloud Computing" the answer? Can you really just "throw" your application on the cloud and have all your hosting nightmares disappear?

For the next COWPU meeting we will be discussing this new paradigm of cloud computing ushered in by Amazon Web Services. This new way of doing things forces developers and administrators to think in an entirely different way when implementing a solution on the cloud.

Need to serve images and video? Put them on S3 which has NO storage limit.

Need a server farm for a web application? Launch a load balancer, your app servers and database server in 5 min. When that server farm gets hammered with traffic, dynamically (programmatically) launch more app server on the fly... 5, 10, 50- No problem.

Do you have a batch processing task that takes 100 hours to crunch? Launch 100 servers and plow through it in a hour...

Total operational cost: $10.00.

We'll be discussing all the above scenarios as well as any negative downstream effects of cloud computing. Fore as we all know, with any new great way of doing things comes new challenges and considerations.

You will help customers enhance their existing websites by taking text, photos, PDF, audio and video and contributing to the web. Approximately 15% of the support requests are graphical in nature, requiring manipulation in graphic programs such as Photoshop and Fireworks. We have many happy customers and while most work is done online, there is a periodic need to speak by telephone for clarification, and professionalism is a must when doing so. Documentary Film Needs Website

Be part of an adventure documentary in the making - Wild Passage. To start, we need a logo and/or a website homepage for a documentary in development called Wild Passage. The website front page will help to bring in funds for a full website.

Wild Passage is a one-hour film about a group of teenagers who survive for nearly a month in southern Oregon's remote Three Sisters Wilderness carrying nothing but a blanket and a knife. Is it possible that young people could actually gain something by going back in time before going forward?

Wild Passage is the chronicles a real-life, down-to-earth experience - the intimate interaction of five modern teenagers with the raw forces of nature. Its most powerful statements will be made not through words but through cold winds and thunderstorms, parched lips and growling bellies, close encounters with bears and porcupines - and most likely an unpredictable mix of blood, sweat, laughter and tears.

I’m bringing on a new client for Azteria that is paying for a dedicated Azteria employee to use our system to recruit to their opportunities. We have been successful for our client where their in-house recruiters haven’t and they are enthusiastic to have someone to delve deeper into call lists for their opportunities. The pay is $30K base with commission that has $100K potential.

I’m looking for a person who is interested in helping to grow the business. Perhaps you’ll know people that are interested in a fun place to work where there is a lot of professional potential. I probably have a month to hire someone.

The position amounts to short term recruiting, but with intelligence, curiosity and passion that will help grow the business and responsibilities long term.

The type of person could be:

Manufacturing Engineer

Overview:

The Manufacturing Engineer (ME) is responsible for enhancing product quality, simplification of processes and procedures, production efficiency and process improvements. The ME will work with R&D, Quality Assurance, Technical Services and Production. Must understand and be capable of objectively evaluating engineering projects based upon their measurable impact to the company and prioritize accordingly. The tasks include but are not limited to the list below.

Responsibilities:

Select, develop, and validate manufacturing processes, equipment, and tooling for the manufacturing of a medical devices.
Support production through efficient and effective identification and resolution of manufacturing issues.
Identify and initiate process and product improvement projects that have meaningful impact on product quality and process yield.
Coordinate activities between R&D and Production

Overview:
Our client is looking for a Software/Firmware Engineer that can support product development through embedded firmware development and support test through LabVIEW test automation as needed.

Our client focuses on technologies that efficiently and reliably convert the energy of sunlight into useable electrical power. Our client’s technology generates clean, renewable power without depleting any natural resources or impacting our environment in any way.

Our client delivers grid-tied solar inverters from 1kW to 500kW with integrated monitoring solutions to the exploding solar photovoltaic industry. Sophisticated software, firmware, and hardware contribute to a first class inverter product. These inverters require extensive product qualification from both a regulatory and reliability perspective.

Responsibilities:

Develop embedded firmware for inverter based control and instrumentation system
Develop embedded firmware for Internet based data monitoring platform
Automate test systems for engineering and manufacturing
- Develop and maintain automated production line test tools for residential and commercial inverters
- Create automation and logging interfaces for test instrumentation
- Develop micro-grid system allowing for automated, grid isolated inverter operation
- Create optimized regulatory test tools to streamline regulatory testing
Document system software requirements specifications, test cases, and qualification results
Leverage best-practice software engineering processes, utilizing appropriate tools

Required Qualifications:

Strong software development background, familiar with all aspects of the software development life cycle
Experience with TI DSP firmware development (24xx or 28xx preferred)
Experience developing embedded firmware in C/C++
Experience in developing embedded Internet based tools a plus
Experience developing power converter or motor control firmware preferred
Demonstrated LabVIEW development experience
Experience in NI Teststand preferred
Experience with software quality management tools such as SVN, Trac, Bugzilla
Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Electrical Engineering preferred
5+ years experience in web-based system architecture design and development

Stay abreast of latest technologies and trends
